From Apprentice to Electrician: Naha Project Opens Career Pathways for Solomon Islanders

Australia’s focus on building the capacity of local workers on Australian-supported infrastructure projects is delivering long-term employment for Solomon Islanders.
Two electrical apprentices trained on the Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre worksite are among the local workers securing further employment based on their Naha experience.
Solomon Islands National University electrical students Loreen Wao and Makare Baiabe gained practical intern experience on the Naha site working alongside CE Group electricians employed on the project.
Australian High Commissioner Jeff Roach said Australia’s investment in both high-quality infrastructure and local workforce development was delivering benefits that extended well beyond project handover.
“We congratulate Loreen and Makare, who represent the many skilled Solomon Islanders building brighter futures after helping to construct the Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre.
“While the Naha facility is now operating as Solomon Islands’ first Level 2 Birthing and Urban Health Centre, another important legacy is the workforce development achieved through the project, with hundreds of local workers gaining employment, new skills and accredited training during construction,” Mr Roach said.
Ms Wao said the Naha project helped launch a career in construction.
"When I started at Naha as a student apprentice, I never imagined I would be working as an electrician on major projects across Solomon Islands," Ms Wao said.
"The experience gave me practical skills, confidence, and a better understanding of workplace safety. Being employed by CE Group has opened new opportunities for me to grow professionally."
The apprentices joined the Naha project through a partnership Australia supported between SINU TAFE and contractors working on the project, giving students real-world experience while building local skills.
After completing their placement, both apprentices secured full-time employment with CE Group and now support electrical works at Naha and other projects around the country.
High Commissioner Roach wished the two well on their career in infrastructure.
"These young electricians have made the most from Australia’s commitment to supporting local workers, progressing from apprentices to full-time employment and we wish them well as they go on to deliver projects around Solomon Islands.”
