Honiara Central Market redevelopment on track

Media Release

28 May 2024

The expansion of Honiara’s Central Market is on track with the concrete slab being poured this weekend and the concrete pedestals for the market’s new large western roof now in place.

Australia is partnering with Honiara City Council to expand Central Market to provide 100 more vendors with cover and new bench tables.

Australia committed over SBD10m to the project, which is being delivered by local builder Tropic Group Builders, creating over 30 local jobs during the construction phase.

Australian High Commissioner, Mr Rod Hilton, said he was delighted to see the work progressing smoothly, led by the project’s skilled local workforce.

“The expanded market will provide a vital space for vendors to earn money to support their families,” Mr Hilton said.

“It’s significant too that the construction itself is creating months of work for local suppliers and construction workers, including key roles for women, such as the site engineer and site manager for this project.”

Mr Hilton acknowledged and thanked vendors, who have temporarily relocated to the eastern side of the market, for their support.

“I know the men and women I spoke to at the commencement of works are looking forward to being able to sell their produce undercover and off the ground,” Mr Hilton said.

“I thank them for their patience as we get this infrastructure project done as quickly as possible, using local workers and without cutting corners on quality.”

Australia’s provincial markets redevelopment program is supporting the construction of new or refurbished markets across six provinces including Malaita, Guadalcanal, Central, Isabel, Makira, and Western Province, to support social and economic development opportunities around the country.

Minor works at the Tulagi Market were completed last month and will be officially handed over to the Central Islands Provincial Government shortly.
