Waka Stret Construction Videos Back in Production

Media release

The popular Australian-supported construction video series ‘Waka Stret’ [Do it right], is back in production, with more practical tips for domestic and commercial construction.

The series, which has been viewed nearly 10,000 times, features SINU carpentry and joinery lecturer, Mathias Nokali, delivering step-by-step advice in Solomon Pijin on common tasks such as installing doors and louvre blades, formwork, building setting out, and external stairs.

New videos are now being produced on how to seal wet areas and bathroom tiling, in partnership with Solomon Islands National University.

Acting Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Schloeffel, congratulated everyone involved in the high-quality educational videos, saying it was another way the Solomon Islands-Australia Partnership was lifting the quality of local construction.

“Videos are a powerful and fun way to engage and educate, especially in local language,” Mr Schloeffel said.

“This series addresses some of the most common issues identified by industry, using the new National Building Code as a guide.”

Presenter Mathias Nokali said it was important to follow local building codes and standards.

“We’re explaining things in a very easy way using video and graphics, so that everyone can understand,” Mr Nokali said. “These tutorials keep things simple, and will hopefully improve the construction skills of our people."

The series of five videos range from 5 to 12 minutes and are free to download from the YouTube/Waka Stret page.
