Eleven planning and policy officials from government and Honiara City Council are in Australia this week to study how to better plan, finance, deliver and maintain infrastructure projects in Solomon Islands.
Representatives from the Solomon Islands construction sector heard powerful stories from people with disabilities working in infrastructure and the valuable contributions they make.
Over 60 local industry representatives learnt how to better estimate costs for tendering for projects, helping them to win work and maintain a profitable, sustainable business.
Since 2019, Australia has invested in over SBD5 billion in infrastructure in Solomon Islands, with over 460 projects delivered across all provinces by mostly local companies and local workers.
Another 22 women from Honiara and rural areas have been selected to undertake training in construction and in solar photovoltaic systems under Australia’s Green Construction Training Program.
Over 80 local building and supply contractors attended the Australian funded Solomon Islands Infrastructure Program’s (SIIP) second Workforce Skills Series workshop, held in partnership with Solomon Water, designed to lift the quality and competitiveness of the local private sector.
